Supervision Training Series: Addressing Racial Bias in Clinical Supervision

This course defines the meaning of implicit bias by looking at the cause and effect of these biases in the mental health practice. Dr. Carla Smith, Dr. Letitia Browne-James, and Dr. Jasmine Ferrill discuss the importance of first acknowledging the biases within yourself in order to help others bring awareness to their own biases. These clinicians provide insight and tools to bring cultural awareness into both your supervision and daily practice.

You will learn:

  • The definition of 'implicit bias' and what it means in clinical supervision for mental health clinicians.

  • How to identify implicit bias within yourself and analyze the origin, along with its impact.

  • The ways clinical supervisors can demonstrate authenticity and how it relates to challenging and addressing biases.

  • To create exercises and tools to utilize during clinical supervision when addressing biases with your supervisees.

This conversation is for the supervisor AND the supervisee, or any clinician. It equips the supervisor with the tools to pay it forward to their supervisee. It shares perspective so the supervisee knows what to look for in a supervisor.

This conversation isn’t comfortable. But as Dr. Jasmine Ferrill says, “discomfort doesn’t always equate to lack of safety.” So let’s get uncomfy!

Dr. Carla, Dr. Jasmine, and Dr. LBJ meet to discuss these automatic assumptions or thoughts and how to talk about them with our supervisees, colleagues, and clients. They explore the barriers to challenging our own bias, triggers, and the awareness factor. We are the experts in the field so we aren’t supposed to have bias… right?

Time to address the elephant in the room: bias.
