Desiree Rew, LCSW, MBA

Desiree Rew, LCSW, MBA, is a licensed clinical social worker in good standing who received an MSW from Howard University and is currently a doctoral student at Tulane University School of Social Work, an accredited graduate social work program. Across more than thirty years in the profession, Rew has practised in a wide range of behavioral health settings and now works as a clinical consultant, speaker, and community steward, and serves as a clinical supervisor with Motivo. Much of the recent work concerns what it actually takes for clinicians to sustain a long career in trauma-exposed settings, which is the subject Rew teaches on. Outside clinical practice, Rew is a freelance food and travel writer and a self-described self-care aficionado, currently living and working as a digital nomad.

Personal ethics and value-based clinical practice: Reimagining self care for clinicians

Personal ethics and values help guide mental health providers through clinical decision-making. They are practical tools we often use to navigate complex situations and, hopefully, lead us to best practices. While often represented as the same thing, ethics and values are distinct and influence providers differently. This discussion will help mental health providers clarify the differences of the terms, their utility in clinical practice, and uncover the ways self-care helps to clear the way for personal ethics and values to positively influence clinical practice.

Holding steady in the storm: Clinicians and supervisors managing political unrest

Political and collective stress reaches the counseling room through the client and the clinician at the same time, and how regulated the clinician is shapes how safe the space feels. This session treats that as clinical and supervisory work. Participants distinguish vicarious trauma from compassion fatigue, apply a four-part resilience framework of awareness, connection, reflection, and recovery, and build a written personal sustainability protocol during a 45-minute experiential segment.

Sustaining provider wellbeing and advocacy in trauma-exposed communities

Clinicians serving communities under sustained threat carry a compound load: the client's traumatic material and the injustice producing it. This session separates four experiences that routinely get collapsed into burnout, covers six practices for building emotional capacity, and makes the case that collective care is what sustains this work over time. Includes a 30-minute experiential planning exercise.
